The Hong Kong Sevens: Experience Rugby in a Festive Environment

Staff writer – March 26, 2019

The most important rugby tournament of the World Rugby Sevens Series is the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens 2019. It brings together some of the best rugby players in the world from 16 national teams. A party atmosphere pervades the stadium as the teams go head to head.

If you love rugby, you must not miss this tournament in beautiful Hong Kong, which will take place from April 5–7. But tickets will sell out fast, especially if you want group tickets, a three-day pass, or a VIP experience in the 1976 Lounge. Act quickly and book your seats!

Rugby Sevens

In traditional rugby, two 15-person teams play for two 40-minute halves. In rugby sevens, each team has seven players and each half is seven minutes. Because there are fewer defenders, the points stack up more quickly so that the final score is often similar to that of traditional rugby. A whole tournament can play out over a weekend and the atmosphere is relaxed and festive.

Rugby sevens gained popularity in Scotland, then spread through England and to Southeast Asia, where the Hong Kong Sevens tournament was born in 1976, sponsored by Cathay Pacific.

Fiji Took 2018

Fiji beat Kenya 24–12 in the final to win the tournament, dedicating their win to those who were affected by the recent Cyclone Josie. Fijian pace man Amenoni Nasilasila’s spectacular performance earned him the HSBC Player of the Final award, having scored 60 points during the tournament.

Fiji had also won the tournament the previous three years. Fiji captain Jerry Tuwai compared the Hong Kong Sevens to the World Cup for Fijians, saying that winning four years in a row was “like winning the World Cup.”

Hong Kong 2019

The 44th Hong Kong Sevens tournament will take place the weekend of April 5–7 in Hong Kong Stadium, which is located in Causeway Bay. The 2019 Hong Kong Women’s Sevens will also take place around the same time, though the schedule has not been announced.

Sevens Village, near the stadium, will host a kick-off concert featuring UB40. Head to Lee Gardens and Chater Garden for party tents with food, music, autographs, and interactive sports activities.

Get to the stadium early each day to see local kids play their own tournaments with the Hong Kong Mini Rugby Football Union.

For the biggest party, sit in the South Stand, where spectators dress up and dance, particularly on Saturday (adults only, as it gets a bit wild!).

Who Is Coming?

The tournament includes fifteen core teams and one invited team—this year, it is Sri Lanka. The teams are divided into four pools. After the pool games, the top two teams from each pool proceed to the Cup brackets.

So far this season, Fiji has won Sevens Series tournaments in New Zealand and South Africa. But New Zealand has also won twice, in Australia and the UAE. Will Fiji win the Hong Kong Sevens a fifth year in a row or will someone unseat them?

Getting Around Hong Kong

You can get to the stadium by metro or bus. It’s about a 15-minute walk from metro station Causeway Bay. Sevens Village, where the kick-off concert will be, is right next to the stadium.
