See Basketball in the Basque Country with EuroLeague Final Four 2019

Staff writer – March 28, 2019

Some sports fans tend to assume that basketball is not a big thing outside North America, where the NBA is played, but that’s not exactly true. Basketball, though not as big as football (soccer), is also very popular in many European countries, and the EuroLeague Final Four is a huge event for basketball fans in Europe and abroad.

This year, the tournament will take place in Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Basque region of Spain. Tourists often overlook this region in favor of Barcelona and Madrid, but there is plenty to see there between matches if you know where to look and is also the home of some of the most admired chefs in the world. Why not plan your next vacation around this epic sporting event and explore northern Spain while you’re at it? But you’ll have to act fast, especially if you want the VIP experience, group seats, or two-day passes.

A Bit of Background

Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur (FIBA) was formed in 1932, in Geneva, and they held their first FIBA European Club Competition in 1957, with ASK Riga as the first champions. In 2000, the EuroLeague, now known as the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague for sponsorship purposes, replaced the FIBA EuroLeague.

The team with the most wins is Real Madrid (many teams share their name with their city’s football team). The EuroLeague consists of 16 teams, which play each other throughout the season, culminating in the Final Four tournament.

Did You Miss the 2018 Tournament?

The Štark Arena in Belgrade hosted the 2018 event, the four contenders being CSKA Moscow, Fenerbahçe Doğuş, Real Madrid, and Žalgiris. Spectators saw several splendid dunks by Aaron White and Brandon Davies (Žalgiris), Ahmet Düverioğlu and Nikola Kalinic (Fenerbahçe), Jeffery Taylor (Real Madrid), and Cory Higgins (CSKA).

In the championship game, Real Madrid beat Fenerbahçe 85–80, with Slovenian player Luka Dončić receiving the MVP award. He now plays for the Dallas Mavericks.

Where and When

The 2019 EuroLeague Final Four will be played in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, at the Fernando Buesa Arena, on May 17 and 19.

What to Look Forward to

As of now, eight of the 16 original teams have been eliminated for the season, and the remaining eight are in the playoffs stage. The four teams that go to the Final Four will be the best of these eight teams: CSKA (Russia) will face KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz (Spain), Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul (Turkey), will take on visiting Zalgiris Kaunas (Lithuania), Anadolu Efes Istanbul (Turkey) will host its first Game 1 this century with FC Barcelona Lassa (Spain), and the defending champion Real Madrid (Spain) will face Panathinaikos OPAP Athens (Greece).

Kirolbet Baskonia is Vitoria-Gasteiz’s home team, so the match will be extra exciting if they advance to the final four. Unfortunately, they currently have the lowest number of wins of the eight playoff teams, at 11. So far, Fenerbahçe has the longest winning streak, with 12 games. They also have the highest number of wins, with 20. At the moment, they are followed by CSKA Moscow, Real Madrid, and Anadolu Efes.

Mike James, an American who plays for AX Armani Exchange Olimpia, has scored 463 points over the course of the season, over twice as many as his nearest rival. The NBA will probably attempt to recruit a number of the EuroLeague players.

Getting around Vitoria-Gasteiz

You can get to Fernando Buesa Arena by bus, taxi, or car. Take the Line 3 bus to the stop Portal Zurbano 2, and you’ll just have a 750-meter walk to the stadium. There is a 2,500-car parking lot available if you want to drive, but if the spots fill up you may have to park on the street.

Between game days, explore the Green Ring, a circle of six large parks. Vitoria-Gasteiz is located on a migration route, so you can do some bird watching too! Also, don’t miss the Gothic cathedral of Santa María and the old quarter known as the Mediaeval Almond. Vitoria-Gasteiz is close to Rioja Alavesa – yes, Rioja as in wine.
